music by robert pleasure
Robert Pleasure, the composer of Holyoke Range for Violin and Cello, is a viola and composition student of Scott Slapin. Pleasure began music composition study when he injured his bow arm, and Scott suggested he consider composition study while his arm healed. During that period. Pleasure completed his first piece at age 81, a duo for viola and cello, titled Cypress Variations. Two years later, after a hiking fall near his home in South Hadley, Massachusetts led to a similar injury, he composed Holyoke Range, named for the place he most enjoys hiking. There is a painting, The Oxbow by Thomas Cole, which comes close to capturing the impact of the view from the Holyoke Ridge. The painting is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and can be seen online.
